It's actually the subject that this photograph stands out for. We expect to see a hilarious girl, or with a grotesque and exaggerated expression. But it is not the case.
Firstly there is a mystery about the old of the girl. She looks prima facie like a little girl. But something tells us that it is wrong.
That leads me to my second point : the expression. It's something between a big sadness and a big weariness. The eyes could tell us thats they seen a lot of things, and maybe some things they shouldn't have seen. And yet, we have the impression that these eyes miss nothing, what could be the biggest illness of this girl, an impression reinforced by the reflection in the eyes : we can see all that this girl is seeing. Some people like me feel then a big emotion, because their temperament requires them to protect this frail girl. Because she is inspiring much sympathy and, in extreme cases, who knows, something akin to love.
This picture has a big impact to me.
